At a loss for.....light!
Photography is truly and art, and a science too.
We at Fashionably Yours, belong to that group of photographers who clicks away with glee whenever in hold of an easy point and shoot which requires no technical know-how or complex manual adjustments.
We have, many a times, thought of investing into a good DSLR, but the very thought of carrying a separate pouch and a bigger camera while on vacation, has refrained us from doing so (how silly. eh?)
Now that I have started blogging, the hubby is insisting on a DSLR, as photography surely plays a pivotal role in a fashion blog.
I, of course, understand the simple equation of DSLR= better quality picture, but then, we can at least get the basics right in a basic device, can't we?
All this while, we have been debating about the ideal or optimum level of natural light for a good quality photograph. We have tried everything under the sun ( I mean, literally under the sun)- morning light, afternoon light, evening light, bright sunny day, cloudy day, direct sunlight, shadow, light and shadow- but could not yet come to a conclusion as to which is better. Sometimes a photograph turns out to be bright and beautiful and sometimes dull and shabby, in the same amount of natural light! And then there is always the problem of an ugly shadow being cast by the subject, i.e. myself!
Even this morning, he was pushing me under the shadow of a tree, resulting in a photograph which is too dark, and I was trying to sneak out into the bright sunlight, resulting in a photograph which is too white!
We are unable to figure out the best light for a better photograph.
We seem to be perpetually at a loss for........ light!
Please do tell me if you have any tips regarding the ideal amount of natural light for a better quality photograph! I would love to hear them!

i try to keep the sun behind the camera, but not directly, at a 45 degree angle. i love your skirt and accessories, don't forget to check out my $50 gift card giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love the pop of colour in the belt! Your bracelets/watch are also a great addition to the outfit. I think that the sun in the mid-morning and the sun in the late afternoon are best!
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Sabrina
I loved how you dressed up the gingham! I have a point and shoot camera and would really love a DSLR but I just can't spend the money on one now. I haven't really figured out the best lighting either! Sometimes photos on cloudy days come out better than my sunny ones. Have a great weekend, Juneli!

sorry, i have no tips for you. i am camera illiterate! i think your pictures are lovely, though. as is your outfit!
ReplyDeleteYou look great! Love that color combo. I understand the light frustration - my favorite lighting to shoot in is a cloudy day about mid-day, but we don't get many days like that!
ReplyDeleteI have recently started taking outdoor shots..so in process of learning these nuances..but photography is an art but definitely a science too..it is technical..
ReplyDeleteLove the dash of yellow!!
OMG! I love this outfit! The colors are great together!

I blogged for almost a year before I bought my DSLR which is a Canon T2i Rebel. Similarly to you, about 4 months into blogging I was thinking to upgrade but it is a big investment. What nobody tells you is that the camera body is not expensive...it's the add-ons...that's where they get you. Between lenses, extra batteries, memory cards, special case...it's going to be a few hundred bordering $1K for the purchase.
ReplyDeleteI am still struggling with light. Sometimes my photos are over and sometimes underexposed. If you decide to get a DSLR check out this blog, http://www.expandng.com/.
Lisa does a great job putting all the settings she uses in the caption of her photos, she shoots on manual mode. And I can try to help too if you decide to get the canon.
Thanks a ton, Bessie for being so helpful and thanks for referring my blog to Lisa!! Will surely bug you for more tips if I decide to get a Canon!
DeleteHi. Bessie recommended your blog to me! She's so sweet! Love the pink gingham and yellow accessories! The best light, IMHO, is diffuse light. So an overcast day is great and you can bring warmth to the photo by shooting with the "cloudy" setting. "golden hour" is great too which is right before sunset. Notice it's "gold" outside. Great for facing the sun or having the sun behind you. Worst time to shoot is midday bc sun do high casting bad shadows but if you're out then, I prefer shade to the sun.
ReplyDeleteHo! I love the bracelets! Lovely outfit!

I love this plaid top!! This is a great chic look for the office... I stuggle with lighting too - seems the best light is early morning or late evening (and I don't have time for that)

Lovely outfit, love the color of your skirt. Hmm...for lighting I usually always do the "golden hour" lighting. Most of the time that works for me because the sun is just starting to set and I don't have direct sunlight or shadows messing with the photos.
